Standing With Makoko: The Housing Emergency

Status: CRITICAL / ACTIVE

The heart of our mission today is the preservation of the Makoko community. As government demolitions leave families displaced and exposed on the water, AIDF is leading the charge to restore dignity through sustainable shelter.

How You Help: Your donation directly buys materials—treated wood, flotation drums, and roofing—to get a family off the water and into a secure home.

The Campaign Goal: Construction of 5,000 Portable Housing Units specifically designed for the unique aquatic terrain of Makoko.

The Relief Effort: Beyond housing, we are providing daily emergency food, clean water, and medical kits to families currently in transition.

Displaced but Not Defeated: The Fight for Makoko’s Survival

The Reality

Makoko is more than a settlement; it is a historic heart of Lagos. Today, that heart is breaking. Ongoing government demolitions have turned thousands of homes into debris, leaving families, children, and the elderly stranded on the water without shelter or a future.

Our On-The-Ground Response

At Impact Africa Development Fund, we don’t just watch from a distance. Operating from our frontline office in Yaba-Oyingbo, we are the first responders to this humanitarian emergency. We are currently:

  • Providing Emergency Relief: Distributing food, clean water, and medical kits to families currently on the water.
  • Relocation Efforts: Identifying the most vulnerable families—those with infants and the elderly—for immediate placement in safe, temporary housing.
  • Legal & Advocacy Support: Standing as a voice for the displaced to ensure their rights are protected during this transition.

THE SOLUTION: 5,000 Portable Housing Units

The Vision

We are moving beyond temporary tents. Our flagship response to the crisis is the Makoko Portable Housing Project.

“A home is the foundation of dignity. By building 5,000 modular, portable units, we are providing a scalable, resilient solution that respects the community’s way of life while providing safety from the elements.”

[Why This Works]

  • Speed: Designed for rapid assembly to house families in record time.
  • Mobility: High-quality, modular designs that can be adapted to the local terrain.
  • Dignity: These aren’t shelters; they are homes, equipped with basic sanitation and ventilation.
